First Things First

I am not a supporter of Trump or Harris for multiple reasons. I’m not going to go into detail about why I think both of them are idiots, but I will say the main reason is that the two-party system will destroy our democracy.

Fake News

What is “fake news,” you may be asking? Fake news is essentially anything that has a large audience but is not factually true. An example of this would be the flat earth theory. Trump uses this term A LOT. He uses it to describe anything that portrays him in a bad light, like CNN.

The Problem with Banning Fake News

Okay, so if I post something on social media that isn’t factual, the platform might ban it. Let’s see how this would work. Platforms will start banning theories like the flat earth theory or “birds aren’t real” because they aren’t true. But what about people saying, “Oh, this person is a bad leader”? The issue is that, to one person, that might be false, and to another, it might be true. So, what is right and what is wrong?

Now you could be infringing on people’s freedom of speech. Look, I don’t agree with the flat earth theory at all. It’s false, and if you believe it to be true, PLEASE DO SOME BASIC RESEARCH. But you have the right to say it, whether I agree with it or not. This could create a huge loophole in freedom of speech. If people don’t have the right to express their opinions, then if you take it a bit further, you could basically ban freedom of speech. Some people might say, “They would never do that.” The thing is, they might. If a person wants to stay in power, and I’m not just talking about a country’s leader but in general, do you think they wouldn’t want to ban people from saying bad things about them?

This won’t happen overnight, and it usually doesn’t—it happens over a few years or decades. We need to think about our future.
